Duluth Children’s Museum

The Duluth Children’s Museum has educated and inspired children for over 80 years. We realize that play is essential to our positive mental, physical, social and emotional development. Play is so important to child development that the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights has determined that play is a basic right of every child. From a dinosaur dig to balls and ramps, our creative and interactive exhibits and programs are designed to spark children’s curiosity through play, learning and discovery. The Duluth Children’s Museum educates children in the fields of science, technology, math and science developing creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication skills.

Great Lakes Aquarium

Great Lakes Aquarium is a hands-on discovery center inspiring guests to explore animals and habitats found in the Great Lakes Basin and other waters of the world. Visitors experience the geologic forces that shaped Lake Superior; watch as divers feed fish in a massive, two-story tank; raise and lower locks on a scale model of the Great Lakes; witness a shapeshifting octopus; and pet young sturgeon and freshwater stingrays. Exhibits showcase 205 different species of fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals providing a unique window into watery worlds. The Aquarium is currently home to more than 900 animals in all. Visitors of all ages will be captivated gazing at swimming seahorses, feeding lively rainbow and brook trout, and watching our river otters at play. A changeable exhibit gallery, designed to interpret marine animals and habitat, currently features “Masters of Disguise” highlighting animals that use camouflage, mimicry and trickery to hide in plain sight.

Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center (US Army Corps of Engineers)

Film shows, model ships and exhibits featuring commercial shipping activities on Lake Superior and in the Duluth-Superior Harbor. At Canal Park, you are within yards of giant lake carriers and foreign ships as they pass under the world-famous Aerial Lift Bridge. While you are there, sit back and enjoy the beautiful gulls and walk along the canal’s piers to its lighthouses. New exhibits on lighthouses and vessel traffic opened with assistance from the Lake Superior Marine Museum Association which operates a small gift shop. Open year-round. No admission. Programs always free. Groups must register in advance. It’s the boat watcher’s paradise. Come and enjoy it.

Northshore Scenic Railroad

A conductor checks your ticket and calls out “All Aboard!” Three short blasts of the whistle and your adventure begins. As the train pulls out of the historic Union Depot in downtown Duluth, your narrator explains the history of our region and the role that railroads played in its development. Two lines of steel lead the train through the city, Canal Park, along the rugged shoreline of Lake Superior and deep into the majestic Northwoods. Riding in vintage open and air-conditioned coaches, you’ll cross over North Shore rivers that splash and tumble towards Lake Superior. Riding the train is great fun! Excursions run seven days a week during the summer, weekends in the spring and fall. Take the 1 1/2-hour Lester River Trip, a six-hour excursion to Two Harbors or the popular family “Pizza Train.” There are “Elegant Dinner Trains,” “Murder Mystery Trains,” “The Grandma’s Marathon Special” and others. Call for group rates and special charters. Trains depart from behind the Depot, May-Oct. Call for accessibility information. Combo tickets earn a generous discount to visit the St. Louis County Heritage & Arts Center, the Depot, which includes three museums, including the Lake Superior Railroad Museum and two art galleries.

The William A. Irvin was the proud flagship of the U.S. Steel’s Great Lakes Fleet. The Irvin provided elegance and comfort to the dignitaries and guests it carried.
